About us

Who are we?

The Rose Collective is an online English-language learning project run by volunteers. We offer online opportunities for people to share and learn English for free.

In September 2025, we were founded by a group of 5 women who met on Heart & Parcel’s blogging project “Food for Thought” and their online zine project “CuiZine”. We wanted to continue working online together when those two projects ended. So we decided to start The Rose Collective.

Why are we called The Rose Collective?

The word “Collective” means working together and making decisions together. This includes all our members but our final decisions are made by the Rose Founding Members (see below). We take it in turns to lead Zoom classes and we are always looking for new ideas for learning and sharing English in an interesting or creative way.

There are a few reasons why we are Roses:

  • The Rose Collective Founding Members live in Lancashire and Yorkshire in the North of England. The symbol of these regions is the red rose and the white rose.
  • Any flowers – especially roses – can symbolise beauty, growth and transformation. Roses bloom every year if they are nurtured and in a good environment.
  • Like people, there are lots of different types of roses. Some grow in people’s gardens, some are wild. A rose is an individual flower but it always grows with others.
  • Roses are connected to nature. We often talk about nature and our everyday lives. Nature is free and can often be a place for us to relax.

Where do we work?

We work online because we live in different places but there are lots of advantages to being online. Firstly, we can welcome members who are disabled and/or who find it difficult to leave the house for different reasons. We can also welcome women are live in lots of different places.

We use Zoom and WhatsApp to meet and communicate.

When do we work?

Our Zoom classes are always in the evenings. This is helpful for women who are busy during the day.

Our Grow & Self-Study WhatsApp chat is also a great place to learn and share English. There are activities every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Again, this is useful for busy women because we can answer and add things to the chat at anytime.

We also love to write and create things. So, we have a blog where we publish our work.
